Rockbursts are seismic events induced by mining which result in damage to underground workings and in some cases, injury and loss of life. The social and economic consequences of their sudden destructive power can be devastating. Rockbursts were first recognized to be the consequence of mining and not natural earthquakes, at the turn of the century, in the gold fields of South Africa and India and the coal mines of eastern Europe. Their study has been on going during the last century but has been formalized in recent years by international symposia on rockbursts and seismicity in mines in Johannesburg in 1982 and Minneapolis in 1988. This volume represents the proceedings of the third symposium held in Kingston, Canada in 1993 and contains five hundred pages including six keynote lectures and sixty five echnical papers on the subject. The proceedings include the latest developments in international research and practice in the area of mining-induced seismicity. Three themes are explored: strong ground motion and rockburst hazard, mechanics of seismic events and stochastic methods, and monitoring of seismicity and geomechanical modelling. Scientists and engineers from seventeen countries in the fields of rock mechanics, seismology, mining, geology and electronics have contributed to an integrated study of one of the most serious problems facing the present and future mining industry. This proceedings volume is essential reading for anyone concerned with ground control in mining and for the geo-scientist seeking a new and unique insight into fracture and earthquake mechanics.
