Geomechanical mine design; Design of underground mining operations; Ground support design and optimization, particularly in late stage, high stress mining horizons; Instrumentation; Mine induced seismicity.
Professor Bawden holds the Pierre Lassonde Chair in Mining Engineering. He has extensive industrial experience in mining, civil construction and petroleum engineering. The majority of Professor Bawden’s recent work and research has been in the Geomechanics of underground hard rock mining. Professor Bawden has particular interest and expertise in ground support systems, geomechanical mine design [i.e. sequencing, stope design, pillar design, etc.], support design in difficult highly stressed ground [including dynamic support], the use of instrumentation systems in strategic and tactical mine design, the development of new instrumentation for mining and civil construction applications, and the geomechanical behaviour of backfill. Professor Bawden’s research is focused on industry related problems primarily in the mining sector, and at the present time is focused on the field scale evaluation of the post-peak behaviour of fractured rock masses and the fundamental and field scale geomechanical behaviour of paste backfill.
