Dr. Phil Byer is a retired Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Centre for Environment, and past chair (1995-2006) of the Division of Environmental Engineering. He came to the University of Toronto in 1975 after receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His teaching, research and professional work were in the areas of environmental planning and decision-making, multiobjective project evaluation, environmental impact assessment, risk management, and municipal solid waste management. In addition to his work at the university, Dr. Byer has been a member of a number of advisory committees for governments and the private sector. He is also a registered Professional Engineering in Ontario.
