Jimmy Lu, EngSoc President 2009-2010, CIV1T0
When we attend school our real goal in learning seems all too often to be masked by this other, insidious desire to simply ‘get marks.’
The cliche that comes to mind, to “do what you love and love what you do and you will never work a day in your life,” is something I strongly believe. Making a choice to apply to University must, at its core, be one of passion. It should not be about gaining simple credit for work done, but for a sincere drive to become educated in such a way that your impact on the world will be a positive one. One finds that when the real goal is re-focused on learning, the marks will come. In life, if you focus on achieving your real goal then the happiness, money, relationships and anything else you desire will come. Remember this when you need clarity in your choices.
I took biology, chemistry, calculus, algebra and physics in high school. It was fun, but I always wanted to use the knowledge for something truly useful. The application of knowledge in the real world is why I chose engineering. I chose Civil Engineering because I really wanted to be able to see this application in people's daily lives. For example, to be able to analyze forces, design a structure and see it built with people using it is very gratifying.
"Civil Engineering is about thinking big."
Now that I’ve been through 3 years of Civil Engineering I’ve come to a few realizations. Yes, it is about geotechnics, materials, structures, analysis, transportation, water resources and buildings - but there is more to it than that.
Civil engineering is about thinking big. It is about creating things for the benefit of thousands (if not millions) of people. It is literally about shaping the world and creating a form from that which didn’t have any before. It is a piece of the puzzle towards creating a sustainable world. Most of all, it is about serving society.
Civil Engineering is the apparent application of science. It is about thinking big and creating solutions that profoundly impact entire populations of people. I you dig deep down and realize your goals can be achieved by studying Civil Engineering, then you owe it to yourself to choose this, the best program in Canada. This is the place for you.
