Non-Degree Studies, Audits, and Visitors
Non-Degree Studies
Students wishing to take graduate courses but not enrol in a graduate program should apply as part-time non-degree special students. Courses taken as a non-degree student will appear on official U of T transcripts, and you will receive a grade for the course. Single courses as a special student cost about $1500, but up to two courses can be credited towards a future degree program.
The application process is similar to that of applying to a degree program. Admission is competitive and subject to availability of space in courses. Please follow these instructions:
- Enter your applicant profile on the SGS Application Site.
- As you submit your applicant profile, the SGS website will prompt you to make arrangements for payment of the $110 application fee. You may pay the application fee on-line or off-line. The fee is payable on-line by credit card, or off-line by credit card, certified cheque or money order.
- After submitting your applicant profile and making arrangements for payment of fee, print one copy of the SGS Application for Admission. Please forward a signed and dated copy of this to the Civil Engineering Department, along with the following documents.
The following documents should be sent with your application:
- Copy of the English Facility score report (if applicable).
- Two letters of reference, at least one should be from an academic background.
- Statement of Interest, including what course/courses you are interested in taking.
- Current Resume (CV)
- Official sealed copies of transcripts from previous degrees.
- Applicants should also have their TOEFL scores forwarded directly to the School of Graduate Studies, University of Toronto. The institutional code for the University of Toronto is 0982. All post-secondary transcripts must be forwarded directly from the issuing institution to the Civil Engineering Graduate Office.
Deadlines for applying as a non-degree special student:
- January 2011 entry: October 1st 2010
- September 2011 entry: June 1st 2011
Auditing a Course
You can apply to audit a graduate Civil Engineering course for the cost of $500.00. You will not receive official credit or be registered as a UofT student, but this allows you to sit in on the course and learn the material. The professor is not obligated to grade your work, but often they will be open to providing feedback. On request, the department can provide you with a letter stating that you attended the class. Once your audit application has been approved you will be contacted via email and will be requested to bring in a cheque made out to the University of Toronto for $500.00.
Required Documents for Auditing:
- Application Form
- A current Resume/CV
- copy of transcript
- 1 page statement as to why you would like to take the course
Please forward all documents to the Civil Engineering Department:
